About Denia

Climate

Denia has a mild and typically Mediterranean climate. Temperatures during the summer reach mid to high 30's celcius. Winters are generally dry, warm and sunny.

Denia Town

Denia is a traditional town which has retained much of its Spanish character and charm.

Sitting high above the town is Denia's most striking landmark: the castle, built in the 11th and 12th Centuries with Roman, Moslem and Christian influences. The castle ruins can now be explored using a number of routes sign-posted through the site and leading to a promenade with great views of the town, harbour and surrounding countryside.

The town centre is a mixture of bustling commercial centre, port and shopping area. From the port, ferries run daily to the Balearic islands. Next to the port is Denia Yacht Club and its Marina. There is also the old fishermen's quarter with delightful cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings and a daily fresh fish market. The town centre has a pedestrian area with small, exclusive boutiques and a main shopping street which is a tree-lined avenue with a good selection of restaurants and cafes. On the seafront are further restaurants and shops.

Beaches

The Blue-Flag sandy beach extends north from Denia town for a distance of approximately 20kms. At various locations along the beach, there are shops and restaurants. Sun-beds and watersports are also available. To the south is the rocky area of Les Rotes with its spectacular coves and clear waters.

Shopping & Markets

The town has a large number of shops and boutiques where you can find all manner of goods from leather to jewellery and souvenir shops. Freshly caught fish can be bought at the fish market, open Monday to Saturday, and virtually anything can be found at the street market held on Monday morning.

Restaurants & Bars

Denia has a wide range of restaurants and bars. These range from international-cuisine restaurants to fast-food outlets. Along the seafront are cafes and restaurants with outside seating and in the main shopping areas are pavement cafes ideal for whiling away a lazy afternoon.

Golf

There are a number of good golf courses within easy reach of Denia. The two nearest courses, within a 15-20 minute drive, are La Sella and Oliva Nova. La Sella Golf Club, designed by Jose Maria Olazabalis, is next to the Montgo Nature Park and offers a wide range of services including tuition, practice range, shop, sauna, club hire, etc. Oliva Nova Gold Club, designed by Seve Ballesteros, is located between Denia and Oliva in a natural setting of wild dunes and right on the beachfront.

Watersports

A wide selection of watersports are available in the area including yachting, snorkelling, wind-surfing, scuba diving, speed boats, boat trips and jet skis.

Fiestas and Culture

During the year there are plenty of celebrations in the town. These include the procession of the Three Kings and the "Romeria" to the Santa Paola hermitage in January; the carnival in the second week of February; the "Mig Any", the winter celebration of the Moors and the Christians; the fallas, which celebrate the arrival of spring in March; the "Hogueras" of San Juan in June which announce the coming of Summer with bonfires on the beaches; fiestas in honour of the patron saint, Santissima Sangre in July; the world famous Bous a la Mar in July, where young men run in front of the bulls to throw themselves in the sea; and also in August the parade of Moors and Christians through the streets dressed in brightly coloured authentic costumes.
